Planning to visit Strasbourg by motorhome for a weekend or during your holidays in Alsace? Here’s everything you need to know to make your stay as enjoyable as possible.
Strasbourg is a stunning city, with its half-timbered houses, quaint cobblestone streets, charming canals, and its iconic cathedral that towers over the town. If you’re looking for tips on what to see and do, check out our guide here.
But you might be wondering: how do you get around, where can you park, and where’s the best place to stay overnight with your motorhome? As a local, I’m here to share my Strasbourg tips to help you navigate and settle in with ease, while making the most of your adventure.
Getting around Strasbourg by motorhome
Driving in Strasbourg with a motorhome might seem a bit challenging at first, but it’s totally doable. The city is well-connected by major motorways and has wide boulevards, making access relatively straightforward for larger vehicles.
That said, driving a car or a motorhome in Strasbourg isn’t the easiest. The city is increasingly promoting eco-friendly transport options like cycling, trams, and carpooling. This means you should expect heavy traffic and sometimes even congestion. Plus, Strasbourg is a Low Emission Zone (LEZ): remember to get your Crit’Air sticker!
Don’t forget your Crit’Air sticker
Since 1 January 2022, Strasbourg’s metropolitan area has been a Low Emission Zone (LEZ). To drive within this zone, you must have a Crit’Air sticker on your windscreen. Make sure to get yours before your trip!
Vehicles with Crit’Air 5 and Crit’Air 4 stickers are prohibited from entering Strasbourg and its metropolitan area. From 2025 onwards, this ban will extend to Crit’Air 3 vehicles as well.
Avoid the city centre with your motorhome
The city centre (where you’ll find the cathedral and Petite France) is largely off-limits to vehicles, especially motorhomes. I highly recommend avoiding this area with your motorhome.
Park your motorhome outside the city
My advice? Leave your motorhome on the outskirts of the city and explore Strasbourg on foot, by bike, or using public transport. It’s not only easier but will also allow you to enjoy the city without the stress of driving.
Where to park in Strasbourg with a motorhome?
The first option, and probably the most convenient, is the Elsau park-and-ride. For just €6.10 per day (or €18.60 if your motorhome is over 3 metres high), you’ll get a secure parking spot, plus a return tram or bus ticket for the whole family, up to 7 people. Convenient, right? And best of all, you can reach the city centre without worrying about traffic.
If you’re just passing through, the “motorhome stopover” area at the entrance to the Strasbourg Campsite could be a good option. With a service point and waste disposal area, it’s perfect for a quick break before hitting the road again. The campsite is located in the Montagne Verte neighbourhood, to the west of Strasbourg.
For getting around the city, you can hire bikes at the campsite or take the tram. The Montagne Verte station on Line B is less than a kilometre away on foot and will take you to the city centre (Place de l'Homme de Fer) in under 10 minutes. If you’re on a bike, it’s about a 10-minute ride from the campsite to the centre along scenic cycle paths.
Where to stay overnight in a motorhome?
If you’re planning to stay a bit longer, you’ve got several options depending on your needs and budget.
4 stars Citykamp Camping of Strasbourg
If you’re after a comfortable spot with all amenities close at hand, Strasbourg Campsite is your best bet. Here, you’ll find stabilised pitches, perfect for a longer stay, or the “motorhome stopover” area at the entrance for a quick overnight. The campsite boasts clean facilities, a service point, and even a swimming pool!
Motorhome Area in Kehl
Just across the border in Kehl, Germany, there are two sites that welcome motorhome travellers:
- The municipal motorhome area on Georges-Köhler-Straße offers a simple but functional spot with a service point and waste disposal.
- For more comfort, the DCC CampingPark offers overnight pitches with all the necessary services, in a peaceful environment just a stone’s throw from Strasbourg.
Badesee Rheinau Motorhome Area
And if you’re up for a bit more driving, why not try the Wohnmobilstellplatz Badesee Rheinau-Freistett near Gambsheim? This parking area, situated by the Rhine, has 24 spots with electricity hookups and all the facilities you need for a peaceful stopover, with a lovely view of the river to boot. Usage fees are reasonable: €10 per day, with water and electricity charged according to your consumption.
What to do by motorhome around Strasbourg?
Being in a motorhome in Strasbourg is also the perfect opportunity to explore the surrounding area and discover Alsace. And when thinking about a road trip around Strasbourg, it’s impossible not to mention the famous Alsace Wine Route.
This scenic 170 km route begins near Strasbourg (in Marlenheim) and allows you to leisurely explore the vineyards, stop off in postcard-perfect villages like Riquewihr or Eguisheim, and of course, sample some fine wines directly from the winemakers (in moderation, of course!). With your motorhome, you have the freedom to stop whenever you like, making the most of every moment.
To help plan your adventure, I highly recommend checking out the article by our friends at Motorhome in France. They share their best tips for tackling the Alsace Wine Route by motorhome, with tailored itineraries and advice on avoiding the crowds. Their insights will be invaluable in helping you discover lesser-known, but equally charming spots.
But the Wine Route isn’t the only highlight of the region. Just a few kilometres from Strasbourg, you’ll find hidden gems worth the detour. The Mont Sainte-Odile and Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg, for instance, offer breathtaking panoramic views over the Alsace plains. And if you love nature walks, the Black Forest, just across the border in Germany, is a paradise with its lakes and hiking trails.
